Tony Fulton was born and raised in Auburn (SE Nebraska) where he attended K-12 public schools. He graduated from Auburn Senior High in 1990 and moved to Lincoln to study Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nebraska. With the exception of one school year he has resided in Lincoln since graduating from high school.
Senator Fulton's family still lives in Auburn. His father is a Marine, a Vietnam veteran who volunteered to serve his country. His mother was born and raised in the Philippines and moved here after marrying his father in 1971. They met through the mail as pen pals while he served in Vietnam.
Tony Fulton married Judy Vandewalle, and her family lives in Lincoln. Judy graduated from UNL with a degree in secondary education emphasizing in high school science. She spent her practicum teaching science at Lux Middle School and then taught at St. Peter's school in Lincoln before opting to become a stay-at-home mom. She is a kickboxing and aerobics instructor at a number of athletic clubs in South Lincoln. She is also active in numerous volunteer capacities locally. Her father, Jack, is from the Albion / St. Edward area and works as a pharmacist at Four-Star Drug. Her mother is from Burwell and plays the organ at St. John's Church in Lincoln.
Tony and Judy Fulton have five children. Their first were twins who are nine years old. Their remaining children are six, four, and one year old. The Fulton children enjoy gymnastics, swimming, baseball, and Tae Kwon Do.
Senator Fulton has been employed in various capacities as a mechanical engineer in the past decade, however in 2003 he founded a business dedicated to caring for the elderly. As a young boy Tony Fulton regularly helped the elderly in his hometown, and this activity continued as a volunteer in his college years. He was able to turn this deeply satisfying experience into a business with the founding of Guardian Angels Homecare. His company presently employs about 90 persons in and around Lincoln.
In November of 2006 Governor Heineman, with the recommendation of Senator Mike Foley, announced the appointment of Tony Fulton to succeed Foley in the Nebraska Legislature. Fulton was sworn in as District 29's senator in January of 2007. Senator Fulton has quickly become a leader in the Unicameral serving on the powerful Appropriations Committee as a freshman and as vice-chairman of the Building Maintenance Special Committee. He was also appointed by his colleagues to the Legislature's Select Committee on Gender and Minority Equity. Senator Fulton has developed a reputation for being thoroughly informed on pending legislation, asking meaningful, probing questions during floor debate to elevate the entire Legislature's understanding of issues. He is regarded as logical, articulate, and competent and has quickly become a key voice in the Nebraska Legislature. |
